The 2019 Audi A6: The beginning of the performance sedan revolution.
If progress invariably involves moving forward, then the introduction of the 2019 Audi A6 at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 2018 represents a giant leap in technical innovation for the venerable sedan.
This eight-generation iteration, which traces its roots to the Audi 100 and Audi 5000 sedans from the 1970s and ’80s, isn’t just a refresh or a makeover. Like the new Audi A8 and Audi A7 that it follows, the 2019 Audi A6 ushers in a new design direction, both inside and out, and it benefits from a significant upgrade in processing power to help control an expanded suite of available driver assistance and connectivity systems.

Hints to where the design of this Audi A6 was heading appeared on its siblings. Chief designer Marc Lichte and his team have said many of the design elements came from the Audi Prologue concept car first seen at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2014. And like the new Audi A8 and Audi A7, the 2019 Audi A6 features a wider, more three-dimensional Singleframe® grille than its predecessor to complement a low hood line. The creases and angles are sharper and more defined. From a profile view, the half-moon shape created by the arc of the roofline and the shape of the window frames carries over from the previous Audi A6, retaining a trademark element while being completely new in other areas. Particular attention was paid to lowering the mid-section and balancing top-to-bottom proportions with a subtle, sculpted crease that is in line with the door handles.
The design team also looked back to the original Quattro coupe for inspiration. The results appear in the crease lines above the wheels that mimic the flared fenders of the Quattro coupe and contribute to a broad-shouldered, confident stance befitting a sports sedan. The end result is a vehicle that fuses an ideal balance of athleticism and elegance.
Lighting plays important roles in both decorative and functional senses. The front headlights feature creatively formed daytime running lights as well as dynamic movement of the turn signals to help create awareness. Shaped with distinction, the rear taillights also incorporate dynamic movement.
In keeping with the Audi tradition of using aluminum to help reduce weight, the structure of the 2019 Audi A6 uses several types of aluminum and steel, with each type of metal chosen for its weight and strength characteristics. This helps make the chassis more rigid than before, which plays a large role in its handling performance. Selected suspension components are aluminum and help contribute to improved ride and handling. The hood, trunk, doors and fenders are also made from the lightweight metal.
This eight-generation iteration isn’t just a refresh or a makeover.
The interior of the 2019 Audi A6 may just be the most revolutionary difference between this A6 and the previous model. The interior design specialists set out to improve the user interface, and they found the solution by looking to modern architectural motifs and devices we’ve grown accustomed to, such as smartphones and tablet computers. Beneath the sleek surfaces of the dashboard is an infotainment system called MMI® touch[1] response.
Comprised of two touchscreens, the system allows users to change settings by touch, swipe or scroll of the fingertip, much in the same way consumers use tablet computers and smartphones. After making a selection, the user can feel a haptic response and hear audio confirmation. The icons for the various systems appear in high-definition graphics and can be arranged to suit user preferences. The lower screen operates all of the climate controls, while the upper screen is the control center for many of the infotainment features in this Audi A6, including navigation, telephone, radio and messages.[1]
Coming from a company renowned for interior comfort, the 2019 Audi A6 was designed to bring new levels of luxury and elegance to the driving experience. Contoured for comfort, the available 18-way individual-contour front seats provide heating, ventilation and massage functionality. A wide spectrum of leather color choices is available, as are many styles of natural wood inlays. The new A6 features increased headroom and shoulder room, while advances in aeroacoustics help reduce the amount of noise entering the cabin over its predecessor.
Audi A6 drivers will find the 2019 A6 a much smarter vehicle. Thanks to a combination of multiple cameras, radar, sonar sensors plus an ultra-fast central processing computer, the number of innovative available driver assistance features[2] has grown considerably. The team of sensors and cameras can help keep drivers aware of their surroundings, which can help relieve the stress of driving in congested traffic. Available features such as Audi adaptive cruise assist can help the vehicle maintain a preset distance while cruise control is in operation. And the available Intersection assist system can detect a vehicle crossing the intersection in front of the vehicle and alert the driver with audible and visual alerts.
Powering the 2019 Audi A6 is a 3.0-liter turbocharged TFSI® V6 engine that can generate up to 335 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Boost from the turbocharger was engineered to come on early so that 369 lb-ft of torque is available from 1,370–4,500 rpm. The vehicle offers a broad range of power and a 7-speed S tronic® dual-clutch transmission programmed to respond to the driver’s desire for relaxed highway cruising or quick gear changes for acceleration. The Audi drive select system features three drive preset modes that range from Comfort to Auto to Dynamic. A fourth Individual setting allows the driver to choose settings from Comfort and Dynamic to create a personalized setting for ride comfort, steering effort and drivetrain response.
The 2019 Audi A6 also comes standard with quattro® all-wheel drive. The system constantly monitors ambient conditions, the driving situation and driver input. It’s a proactive, fully variable all-wheel drive system that can anticipate for both driver demands and the many challenges that the road offers.
Engineered for today’s mobility, the 2019 Audi A6 harnesses the power of the processor to expand the ways in which it can assist the driver and enhance driving performance. Well-connected, its available technological reach extends to the cloud, while drivers and passengers enjoy a new standard of design sophistication firsthand. The world was expecting a lot from the 2019 Audi A6, because Audi designers and engineers expect a lot from themselves.
